Cus­tomize Quick­Look for fonts

Quick­Look, the abil­ity to see a quick pre­view of files and fold­ers sim­ply by select­ing and then press­ing the Space bar has been avail­able for some time now.

This is a great time saver and gives access to infor­ma­tion that in many cases you would oth­er­wise have to install spe­cific soft­ware to get. Quick­Look can view was num­ber of for­mats but it is pos­si­ble to extent its use by adding plug-ins to it. Most of them are free. Some soft­ware devel­op­ers offer plug-ins for Quick­Look for their soft­ware if Quick­Look does not pre­view files made by their software.

One of Quick­Look great­est fea­tures in my opin­ion is that it can pre­view fonts. Not only to see if it’s the font I am look­ing for, but also to see if the six glyphs spe­cific for the Ice­landic lan­guage, are in the font (which is a com­mon prob­lem) or, if they are, to see if they are drawn in a proper way and usable.

The Archive thing

Look at the top of the header of the new look. I added a new page called Archive. Check it out. It con­tains a list of all arti­cles on this site. Major­ity of the arti­cles are in Ice­landic, but hey, Google can trans­late it for you.

I am writ­ing mostly in Eng­lish now unless it’s some­thing only rel­e­vant to Ice­landic read­ers. Take a look at the Archives, maybe you’ll find some­thing there you missed before.

I got a request from a designer who wants to get started with grid based design, or at least wants to know what it is all about. The ques­tion was like this: Can you rec­om­mend a good primer on grids? Seems to me all mate­r­ial I find on it is way beyond what I’d call basic.

The ques­tion was asked on Twit­ter, so my answers were lim­ited to the 140 char­ac­ter bound­aries. There­fore I split the answers into six sec­tions like this:

New look, not just for the looks

This site was just moved between servers at my host provider. The rea­son for this was that the SQL data­base on the old server was out­dated and pre­vented me from updat­ing Word­Press. Það er eit­th­vað svo kun­nu­glegt við þessa set­ningu, er það ekki? Ég þori ekki að ful­lyrða hve oft í mánuði ég þarf að svara svona tölvupósti. En það er mjög oft.

Það eru nokkur atriði sem eru sameigin­leg með þes­sum pós­tum. Yfir­leitt eru engar upplýsin­gar um í hvað á að nota lógóið, prent eða skjámiðla. Þar af leiðandi ekki upplýsin­gar um hvor sé óskað eftir cmyk eða rgb útgáfu og svona mætti lengi telja.

Þetta er kannski pínulítið vil­landi fyrirsögn, því mest er talað og skri­fað um íslen­skt hnap­paborð í tengslum við hvort töl­van sýni íslen­ska stafi eða ekki. Sem sagt Ice­landic Key­board, Uni­code og svo framvegis.

Ein lang viðamesta ten­glasíða um letur er síða Luc Devroye, Belga sem býr í Canada.

Síðuna má finna á: http://cg.scs.carleton.ca/~luc/ Þetta er ekki svo merk­i­legt í sjálfu sér, gerist stun­dum. Það er hins vegar svolítið gaman að lesa pis­tilinn þar sem hann segir frá því af hverju hann flutti síðuna frá háskólanum þar sem hún var vis­tuð áður.

PS : Píluputti

Á nokkrum stöðum í Pho­to­shop gefst manni kos­tur á að nota þen­nan píluputta. Þetta er á stöðum þar sem spurningin snýst um að breyta prósen­tum t.d. á flæði á pennsli, styrkleika á lit og því um líkt.

Letur : Bókin á náttborðinu

Lino­type gaf nýlega út stærðar bók með sýnishornum af öllu letri sem fyrirtækið býður upp á. Type­face Cat­a­log A-Z. „Aðeins“ 6538 letu­raf­brigði sýnd í veg­le­gri og van­daðri bók. Það er auðvi­tað hægt að skoða þetta allt saman á vef­síðunni þeirra, en það jaf­nast ekki á við að hafa svona flotta bók í hön­dunum. Hægt er að panta bók­ina á 19 dol­lara og sendin­garkos­naður bætist svo við. Nokkur veg­gspjöld fyl­gja með í kaupbæti.

Bókin er fyrir marga eflaust jafn áhugaverð lesning og símaskráin. Engar myn­dir — bara stafir! En í því er ein­mitt fól­gið gildi hen­nar. Frábær uppflet­tibók yfir letur.
