Diode lamp shows darkÂness and daylight
This is a conÂcept for a diode light unit which I sent in for a comÂpeÂtiÂtion held by The IlluÂmiÂnatÂing EngiÂneerÂing SociÂety of IceÂland and OrkuÂveita ReykÂjavÃkur (The MunicÂiÂpal Energy Grid). The final results of the jury are in and this conÂcept got an honÂorary menÂtion as being both techÂniÂcally and aesÂthetÂiÂcally pleasÂing. Although I didn’t win the main price I just wanted to show you the piece.
I will soon present few other things related to this basic idea. And also a kind of a sisÂter piece which I am designÂing too. The picÂtures here are made in IllusÂtraÂtor and Photoshop.

The idea is an info-graphic panel showÂing the amount of dayÂlight and darkÂness at a given latÂiÂtude anyÂwhere in the world. The light beams out of drilled holes on the panes. In each hole there is a diode light which colour and lumiÂnosÂity is conÂtrolled by the user who can select between built in preÂsets. The built in setÂtings as well as cusÂtom ones are conÂtrolled by a small conÂtrol board on the side of the panel or by using a remote conÂtrol or even with a phone.
You can choose between setÂtings like showÂing only one day, where it also serves as a calÂenÂdar, all the year at once, solÂstice, equinox or a clock and few other visual setÂtings like runÂning fast through every day of the year. Dial in a name of a city or latÂiÂtude to get the corÂrect visual repÂreÂsenÂtaÂtion of dayÂlight at any given place.
The mateÂrÂial use is brushed steel, acrylic or wood. DimenÂsion for inteÂrior use is 800 x 800Â mm.
Another verÂsion I have in mind is a huge panel on a good wall outÂside in a city at a pubÂlic square or such. In this case the panel would be like 5 x meters. This would also mean that there could be many more diodes and thus more precision.
Here you have some of the mockup picÂtures I sent in. This is set up for ReykÂjavik, IceÂland at 64° north. You see at the top of the cirÂcle how short the days are in DecemÂber and how long they are in the sumÂmer. At the ecuador all the cirÂcles are of even width.
